Impact…and a North Star

For as long as I can remember, one thing I have always wanted is to leave it better. Whether ‘it’ was a one-time encounter or a long-running relationship (some were horrifyingly short, I’ll admit 😏), a riding crew or a corporate firm, a leading or supporting role, a person or a group…I wanted to leave knowing that I added such value that ‘it’ was better off because of me.

I think this trait might be what I admire the most about Jacky Wright, who started with a degree in political science, and is today a living legend and world leader in Tech. I was privileged to grab a few precious minutes with her in 2023 – and give me my flowers here because Jacky IS a big deal – so I asked the one question I’ve had since learning of her simply-inspiring career journey: “Jacky, how did you do it?”

I can’t share all the nuggets she was gracious enough to pass on (go grab your own time! 😁), but suffice it to say that she is also driven to add value, and has stayed true to it. The medium does not matter as much if you stay true to whatever it is that drives your life (purpose).

For me, it is impact…the positive type.

For example, I was the Compere for the 2023 holiday party at work last month. While doing this was an honor, the best part was hearing about the positive impact my role had had on those attending, from those attending. In one guest’s words, “shortly after you took the mic, I turned to my wife and asked when the company started hiring professional Masters of Ceremony for the gig – I could not believe you worked here!”

In other words – and yes, I know you got the gist, but hey, let me milk it plixxx! 😊 – I did an amazing job, it translated to a lot of beautiful people having a well-deserved fun evening, and I had a great time doing it!

I know I typically carry on like I always have it all figured out and know exactly what will happen next – and I do, sometimes, like when I light a flame to a piece of paper, or when I fry plantain…I know exactly how those things will turn out – burnt! 😂 Honestly though, there are times when I too am uncertain of the what, unsure of the how, and even suspicious of the why! In those times, I just rely on that drive within me, to make positive impact; and whether it is through the words I say into a microphone or the ones I type out on a keyboard, it comes through…my North star.

What is your North star? I’d love to read in the comments, or send me a message if you’re shy. If you don’t know yet, it’s okay too – I’ll let you know when next I burn plantain 😉. But together, let’s all raise glasses to these stars that led us through an impactful (albeit, trying) 2023; the same ones that will lead us through a better 2024.

To the North star! 🥂
